Sexual diversity in British Media

Timed to coincide with the release of the BBC’s consultation on the portrayal of LGBT audiences, the seminar will discuss the representation of this community across TV, radio, press and online; the employment of lesbian, gay and bisexual people in the media; and examine the opportunities for investment and advertising presented by a vibrant and growing LGBT market.

Wednesday 21 April 2010 | Administrator MiM

Sessions will look at:
  • The LGBT community - on screen and behind the scenes in broadcasting. Do the media have a responsibility to challenge perceptions about LGBT people?;
  • Discussion of the BBC’s consultation into the portrayal of lesbian, gay and bisexual audiences;
  • Sexual diversity and the media - representation, equal employment and regulation; and
  • Power of the pink pound - analysis of the LGBT spend and opportunities for advertisers and brands.

A key output of the seminar will be a transcript of the proceedings, sent out within a week of the event to Ministers and officials at Ofcom, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and other departments affected by the issues, as well as Parliamentarians with a special interest in these areas. It will also be made available more widely.

The seminar is organised on the basis of strict impartiality by the Westminster Media Forum on Wednesday 7 July in the afternoon. An up to date copy of the agenda and information about subscriptions can be viewed ‘live’ here.
